A Background To My Dreams...

"To dream anything that you want to dream. That's the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do. That is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits. That is the courage to succeed."

How very true.

Dreams are important. They fuel us through the sometime mundane tasks of day to day living and inspire us to become something that will make a difference in the world. Every one has a dream. Some are great, some are small, but all mean something to the person who has dreamed them.

I have a dream, I imagine that you would as well. I dream to be a nurse. I dream to be a midwife. I dream of finding that special someone, creating a home, having a family.

Some of my dreams are beginning to become reality. Some are just starting to make there way through to the real world. Others remain a dream.

I'm a Graduate Registered Nurse. Its both exciting and terrifying. Exciting..I'm out there, making a difference, helping people who need it. Terrifying...What if i can't help, what if theres no way to help, what if someone dies. Its the intimate nature of nursing that attracted me to it. I'm a caring person. I like to make people feel better. I believe i will be a good nurse. Even a great nurse. But i also believe that i am a long way off of that point.

There are many things i need to be a part of before i feel i can reach this point. Its not only the academic stuff i need to learn, but also the deaths i need to be apart of, the lives i need to help change before i learn true compassion and empathy for my patients and their family. I imagine that this will be difficult at times, but very, very, VERY rewarding at others.

I plan to study midwifery. Delivering babies is an amazing experience. For those who havent been involved in this process, you cannot begin to imagine the feeling. This small human, created by two people, emerging into the world. A miracle itself, a truely special moment to be apart of. I was lucky enough to assist with two deliveries while on a 2nd year nursing placement in a country hospital in 2009. I was very grateful to both mums for letting me be there when their little bundles of joy came into the world and taking their first breaths (And for those wondering, both had healthy baby boys!). I always wanted to become a midwife, but being apart of this experience cemented that want into my brain. I am planning to go back to part time study in 2012 and begin the part time, 3 year course so i can make delievering little miracles a permanent thing.

Until next time.. :D x
